Simple Explanation of Interstitial Cystitis

I found this straightforward, simple explanation of Interstitial Cystitis (IC), and I thought I would share with you.

Interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a complex, chronic disorder characterized by bladder pain often with urinary frequency and urgency. The symptoms resemble those of a urinary tract infection, but there is usually no infection and patients do not respond to antibiotic medication.

The pain can range from mild to severe and there is no cure for Interstitial Cystitis. Treatment can range from pain management, treatment directly into the bladder (called intravesical treatment), filling the bladder with water (hydrodistension) to see where bladder pain may be coming from, and using an electrical current to destroy any abnormal cells or tissues.

The cause of IC/BPS is unknown. Researchers are investigating many theories to understand the causes of IC/BPS and to determine appropriate treatments.

    1. Rachelle, I understand your frustration with this disease. I have been in a flare up for days now. Why can’t they find a cure or even an effective way to treat IC. If you would like to talk via WhatsApp, let me know.
