I came across this an article on a website that talked about stem cell therapy used to treat Interstitial Cystitis (IC). The article was dated October 19, 2018 so the information is current. Keep in mind that this website is a business that markets their products and services just like any other business. Always thoroughly research any treatments including traditional medicine & procedures, new drugs & therapies, alternative or holistic remedies, etc.
I have heard of stem cell therapy; however, I have not read much about stem cell therapy specifically used to treat IC. I know that there is a lot of controversy surrounding this type of science. Stem cell therapy is considered an investigational therapy.
The basic premise of this therapy is that stems cells replace the damaged cells in the bladder wall. The body uses the stem cells to “self-heal” itself. The website states “Stem cells are undifferentiated cells capable of both integration and multiplication, which means that these cells not only divide and multiply in number, but also differentiate into specialized cells and tissues.” [https://www.nationalstemcellcenters.com]
The National Stem Cell Centers website states that they do NOT use embryotic cells. Only your own adult mesenchymal stem cells or autologous cord blood cells (stored at a registered cryostorage lab) are harvested or used.
From what I can tell, health insurance does not pay for this type of therapy. The cost estimate on this website is between $5,000 and $10,000. Also, there is a disclaimer on their website that states “…[the] Centers are not offering or promising stem cell therapy as a cure for any condition, disease, or injury.”
If anyone has firsthand knowledge about the success or failure of stem cell therapy for IC or any other disease, please add a comment below. I included the link below if you are interested in reading the complete article.
I know of a person who has had stem cells injected up his nose for schizoaffective disorder. The last I knew this treatment isn’t legal in this country (I guess for some illnesses or injuries it is legal and for others it’s not?) and I don’t know all of the details, but I do know that it made a difference. I have a feeling that pharmaceutical companies stir the controversy. Thanks for sharing the link. I believe in stem cells and cures.

Crystal – Thank you so much for your comments. I am hoping one day IC will no longer be an issue. And yes, I think stem cells will help with a variety of diseases in the future.

I wish it was too! I guess they don’t want to cover many things that WORK! 😉🙏
