Many people with Interstitial Cystitis take Marshmallow Root.
Marshmallow Root is a key supplement in an effective IC relief protocol! The cost is affordable; however, you need to know a few things. You must obtain dry Marshmallow Root (in bulk). Mountain Rose Herbs is an online option. According to many people, capsules or supplements with marshmallow, they will be a waste of your time and money. You need the true bulk plain herb.
Marshmallow Root has an affinity for the bladder. It is mucilaginous meaning it produces a slimy beneficial and protective coating for your tissues, especially the bladder. It has been used to heal IC. It also does not give a herxheimer reaction that many herbs can give because most of them have some sort of antimicrobial properties. This herb is also used by people diagnosed with Lyme Disease with no problems with die off. Drinking a lot of water is very important.
Marshmallow Root cold water infusion is the preferable method used to prepare this supplement. You can also make a tea if you are in a hurry. The cold water infusion is superior for Marshmallow Root because it pulls the mucilage more than the starch with cold water. The tea pulls more starch, which is not necessarily bad, but the less starch/sugars the better when dealing with Interstitial Cystitis, Lyme Disease and yeast overgrowth.
Marshmallow Root Cold Water Infusion Recipe:
- 32 0z glass mason jar
- 1 cup of marshmallow root
- Fill jar to rim with room temperature purified water
- Leave steeping for 4-10 hours
- Strain
- Refrigerate in glass jar
- Drink as needed
Begin drinking 1- 4 glasses of marshmallow infusion daily for 2 weeks or until you are pain free. Once you have established it’s presence in your system you can go down to about 1 glass a day, for a time. Then use as needed when you feel a flare coming on, or one cup daily for 6 months for long term healing of the bladder lining.
For some, this herb works nearly instantly, relieves the pain in the bladder lining; however, some people need to use this supplement for a few weeks before noticing the benefits.

I have been using marshmallow root per your blog and others and I have noticed immediate relief when drinking four cups a day! It can be a bit messy however as 32oz mason jar seems to be small for 1 cup of the root. It ends up floating to the top and it all spills out when trying to pour it. I will buy some more mason jars to compensate for this. The dried freeze Aloe Vera also has helped, but the marshmallow root infusion has definitely removed the pain when I drink it. I bought the capsules recently and will try them even though you mention they do not work as well.
