Understanding Urodynamic Tests for Bladder Health

Video transcribed below.

A urodynamic test involves filling and emptying the bladder with water through two small catheters (tubes used to fill and drain fluid from the body).

This measures bladder pressures as the bladder fills and empties. In patients with Interstitial Cystitis or Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS), bladders are sometimes small in capacity and may be painful when filling.

Is a Urodynamic Study painful?

While a urodynamic study can feel uncomfortable, especially during catheter insertion, it’s generally not considered painful, and most patients find it tolerable.

Do they numb you for a Urodynamics?

The test is performed without any need for anesthetic, sedation or fasting.

How long does a Urodynamics take?

The test is generally an outpatient procedure. It is performed in our urodynamics suite. How long does the test take? The test will take approximately 20-30 minutes from start to finish.
