Resiniferatoxin🌵and Interstitial Cystitis

Resiniferatoxin (RTX) is a chemical derived from a cactus-like plant. It is effective in blocking signals from the bladder nerves to the brain 🧠; hence, reducing the strength of the urge to pass urine, allows the bladder to hold urine longer, and relieves symptoms of an overactive bladder.

Several studies have investigated the use of intravesical (within the bladder) RTX for IC, with varying outcomes. Some smaller studies have shown that RTX can lead to a reduction in pain and improvements in symptoms like frequency and nocturia in IC patients.

However, a larger, randomized controlled trial found no significant difference between RTX and placebo in terms of pain, frequency, or other relevant symptoms.
