Research shows that strict adherence to an Interstitial Cystitis diet could help alleviate symptoms in as little as 3 months.

Research from 2017 that evaluated the clinical efficacy of dietary modifications in females with Interstitial Cystitis (IC) showed that strict adherence to the Interstitial Cystitis diet could alleviate symptoms in as little as three months.

According to the Global Interstitial Cystitis and Bladder Pain Society, dietary modification is a vital treatment plan for people with food sensitivities. This may include limiting or excluding foods and drinks that change the pH of the urine. The Interstitial Cystitis Association notes that foods and beverages that trigger symptoms vary for each person with the condition.

Foods and beverages that trigger Interstitial Cystitis symptoms vary for each person with the condition.

Additional information not included in the video above: The Interstitial Cystitis Association in the U.S. states that a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods from all food groups, is essential for overall health and managing Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS). For those with IC/BPS, it’s important to limit certain foods and beverages that trigger symptoms. However, restricting too many foods can negatively impact health, so it’s crucial to find alternative options to replace the nutrients from restricted items. There are plenty of substitutes available to help manage bladder symptoms while maintaining a healthy diet.

According to Medical News Today, diet alone may not improve the symptoms, but consuming certain foods and avoiding others can provide some relief. The publication goes on to state that dietary management can be an effective part of the treatment plan for Interstitial Cystitis.

I believe diet is one part of the treatment plan you will need to manage your symptoms. Also, you may find that naturopathic intervention in addition to traditional medicine is needed. A lot of people with IC need to have physical therapy for periods of time. So basically, treating Interstitial Cystitis requires a multi-modal approach. Of course, always check with your medical provider before changing, adding or stopping any parts of your treatment plan.
